Today was a rest & recovery day since we were in the middle of a three-day minor surf period. Forecasts show a nice solid NW moving in for Friday-Sat and maybe Sunday. Slept in and breakfasted at the Villa, read the paper trying to catch up on local politics (PDP and the NPP; Vieques; and, the Venezuelan Winter League going to hell because of the country's general strike) and events. In the afternoon we mapped several Puntas beaches, from Pools to Rivermouth, for Surfrider's Beachscape program. For the Rincón quad we only need to complete Deadman's and Spanish Walls (it was mud bogged from the north end). We capped our "surf" session by sipping some piña coladas and tropical rum punches (parcha y piña) at the Tamboo Tavern (at Beside the Pointe), the Calypso at Maria's Beach, and back at Villa Cofresí. We met a just married couple while beachscaping Sandy Beach -- he is from Michigan and she is from Manatí (home of Tubos!). We talked story with the waiter at Tamboo... turns out he is from Brittany, France and he was surprised when I asked him about which was the better place to stay next October, Brest or Quiberon. He recommended Crozon, a long walling wave that I have ffrequently viewed on the cams. Turns out the bartender at the Calypso had some mutual acquaintances from our high school days: las hermanas Hardy! After a full afternoon of beachscaping, tropical drinks and appertivos, we were ready for Villa Cofresí's special Christmas Eve dinner. Featured was one of our favorites: lechón, arroz con gandules, salad, garlic bread, amarillos, and flan. We added a bottle of Concha y Toro red. |
