Miami and Martinair (from the other post) is good advice. Orlando can at times
be just as cheap as Miami. You can also go through the "Surf Tour" people to
get your airfare because they get bulk rates.

Bulk rates can be pretty cheap. But watch out they might try to sell you hotel
packages and that is wack. Use them for their bulk rates for air/vehicle.

Q&A with Joanne VanMeter on her Feb 2001 Trip to Playa Negra:

Our Annapolis Surf Club is getting together tomorrow night to discuss next Spring's trip to Costa Rica, Sayulita or some place
else.  What did you trip cost in terms of lodging?

See playanegra.com for my lodging.  I shared a hut with three girls.

Were meals included?

No, plan on food costing the same as here.

Rental car (4WD?)?

Yes, 4 WD is a must and costs were probably similar to here.

Did they have a boat or vehicles to ferry you about or was that an option?

Not an option.

Would you stay there again or go somewhere else?

I had a hard time sleeping in these huts because the wind is very loud and whistling through those roofs.  Lots of bugs in the room (wasps, large spiders, scorpions and a salamander were just some of our roommates) and no airconditioner.  You almost might as well camp.  But it was ok and nice to be close to Playa Negra.  They let me keep a running tab for food and drink and only pay once at their restaurant, which was convenient.

Playa Negra is a blast and worth the stop but be sure to get it.

Any other comments/suggestions?

Try to fly from San Jose to Liberia and get your rental car there if you can.  I didn't and had to endure the all day drive cross country.

Tamarindo is very set up for everything you will need.  I'm not familiar with the surf around there however.

Did you check out the wedgy sand bars right off Iguana Azul, a couple of miles south of Playa Negra? I had insane sessions there a while ago.
